Second Year for Zion's "New"
Good Friday Cross Display

"After twenty years it was time for new crosses," Pete Midgarden told us in 2010. Now, another Easter is arriving and those "new" crosses begin their second year in 2011. The log beams for the crosses have been in storage since last Easter, so the crew of Steve Vasco, Charlie Canning, and Pete Midgarden went to Pete's barn and loaded the logs on to Vasko's truck. Pastor Dave put the red flag on the longest log for the trip to Zion Lutheran Church of Silverhill and then assembly for display.

Before! Before the three cross display is assembled at 15875 4th Avenue in beautiful Silverhill, the front lawn looks pretty normal.

The beams of the crosses have been transported from storage in the Midgarden barn. Here they are laid out, bolts in place, and ready for complete assembly on the lawn of Zion Lutheran Church.

Charlie Canning, Steve Vasko, and Pete Midgarden (l to r) measure the lawn to find last year's markers in the lawn before beginning the post-hole digging to mount the cross display.

A three cross Easter display has been erected in front of the church at 15875 4th Avenue at 7th Street in beautiful Silverhill, just a block south of State Highway 104, for more than 20 years. The display will be in place through the church's Easter Season, commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as reported in the Gospels.

Pete Midgarden digs deep into the soil to allow each cross to be self-supported. The post hole digger is a couple feet down or more at this point.

Each cross is lifted up in turn and seated in its prepared post hole. Canning, Midgarden, and Vasko (l to r) make short work of the project, each piece of the erection process planned well in advance.

After! The crosses have been assembled and are in place for the Friday evening Tenebrae service at Zion Lutheran Church. They will remain until the completion of the Easter liturgical season.
