Dr. Michael Coleman's New Work Featured at Pensacola ComposerFest

     Dr. Michael Coleman's "When" with lyrics by his mother, Dorothy Coleman, premiered at the Pensacola ComposerFest concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 10, 2006 at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium at Pensacola Junior College. It was sung by PJC student Catherine Florian, Dr. Coleman accompanying.

     Pensacola ComposerFest is an annual new music event in its second year which features a variety of music by local and regional composers.      Baldwin County native son Michael Coleman is organist and music director at Zion Lutheran Church in beautiful Silverhill. Dr. Coleman, Adjunct Professor teaching music at Pensacola Junior College and the University of West Florida, is a graduate of Fairhope High School.      A piano concert comprised of music by living composers was enjoyed by many at Pensacola Junior College's Fall "Lyceum Series" on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at 7:30 PM. The repertoire included Dr. Michael Coleman's "Two Bagatelles" performed by Dr. Jeri-Mae Astolfi, faculty member at Henderson State, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. This Lyceum Series concert at Pensacola Junior College's Hagler Auditorium on the main campus, was open to the public, general admission--$10; children, students, and seniors over 60--$8; and PJC Seniors Club, faculty, and staff--$6.      The Lyceum Series is PJC's cultural series available to students and public. It consists of music performances, theater events, dance programs, visual arts exhibitions, and distinguished speakers. Lyceum events are free to students. The Lyceum Series is also a humanities credit elective in which students participate in seminars before and after events.

Featured in Astolfi's Concerts




     Dr. Michael Coleman, organist for Zion, was recently honored when his two Bagatelles for solo piano were played in Arkansas. The first concert was held June 19, 2006 at Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and the second on June 22, 2006 at the University of Arkansas, in Little Rock.

Picture of Jeri-Mae Astolfi      Dr. Jeri-Mae Astolfi, a faculty member at Henderson State, performed both concerts which were outstanding and consisted of piano music by living composers. She will repeat this program at Pensacola Junior College's Lyceum Series on September 5, 2006.

     These works will be recorded by Dr. Astolfi on a CD to be released this fall through the "Society of Composers Performers Recording Series". She teaches both piano and music theory at Henderson State University. This CD and other recordings made by Jeri-Mae Astolfi can be found on Astolfi's CD website.

     His Two Bagatelles were composed in 1995 during Dr. Coleman's ASCA (Alabama State Council on the Arts) Artist Fellowship grant term of 1994-95. The first piece is like an introduction to the second and are performed as a set rather than individually.

     Recent awards received by Dr. Coleman include Certificate of Excellence for Best Short Composition and First and Second Prize in the Keyboard Category of the 2001 Composer's Guild International Contest held in Farmington, Utah. He has participated as composer and pianist in numerous new music programs and festivals in the U.S., France, and Russia.
