Wycliffe Kvale Mission Family

"We both know what 'uff-da' means without looking for a translator!" Steve and Glenda Kvale will tell you. They grew up in Minnesota with its Scandinavian traditions. There are other "foreign" words they might know, but God has called them to work with Wycliffe Bible Translators. "But more important than knowing foreign words is" (you guessed it) "knowing Christ," they will tell you. Steve came to know Christ at a youth retreat when he was 15. Glenda came to know Christ through her second grade Sunday School class. They will be sharing their story of being called to Bible translation mission at Silverhill's Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday, March 1, during the Sunday School hour at 9 AM and with a Temple Talk after worship at 10 AM.

Wycliffe Kvale Mission Family
Jason, Steve, Neliana, Glenda, and Lenaya Kvale (l to r) are a family working with Wycliffe Bible Translators. They will share details of their ministry at Zion Lutheran Church in Silverhill on March 1, 2009 at 9 AM Sunday School and 10 AM Worship.

It will be an interesting story. Steve comes from a background in education and computer programming. Glenda's background is in administrative support. They feel that their life experiences have trained and equipped them to work closely with the local church and with connecting the work of missions to the local body of believers. Steve has specific background in Bible school education, deaf ministry, US short-term missions, and cross-cultural experience in Europe, Bermuda, and Canada. He has been involved with church leadership roles, worship teams, children's ministries, and youth work. Glenda has a background in Bible school education, children's ministries, church leadership roles, women's ministry, US short-term missions, and inter-cultural projects in the Dominican Republic and Canada. Steve anticipates the next question, "Well, what about our children? Jason invited Christ into his life when he was very small. Neliana and Lenaya, also coming to know Christ when very small, continue to grow in the Lord and have interest in what God is doing in the world."

"Our children, Jason, Neliana, and Lenaya, have generally had interest in mission and cultural studies throughout the home-school curriculum we've used," they note. "However, they expressed a much deeper interest and heart for missions after attending local missions conferences in 2005. We were also drawn to check this out further and were directed to the JAARS website to fill out an IT assessment as we considered missions in IT (Information Technology)." That was at Christmas of 2005! "In the new year, 2006, word came back from Wycliffe that with education, experience, and Bible school already under our belt, we'd be equipped to take a missions assignment here or abroad to support the work of Bible translation with computer technology if we were willing to come! Wow! We always thought, 'missions,'" Glenda and Steve will tell you, "but, 'ya sure,' in the future sometime."

The family sought counsel and they prayed. Hard! After prayer, counsel with respected spiritual leaders in their lives, and seeing the green light from their kids, they accepted God's call to full-time missions. "We began our formal application process with Wycliffe in January 2006, were accepted as members in July 2006, and went to training camp as a family in September 2006. We are thankful and happy that Steve's skills as a computer programmer can be invested in furthering the truth of God's Word to the nations. Our whole family can also volunteer additional skills and talents as opportunities arise."

The Kvale family will explain how they accepted an assignment to serve with the computer missionary team at the Wycliffe Bible Translators headquarters in Orlando, Florida. This team serves the information technology needs of Wycliffe missionaries around the world. They will be able to join this team when their regular support is at 100%. Wycliffe is a mission organization that requires its missionaries to raise their own support before entering the mission activity. "Yes, we are interested in any financial help, but please consider becoming a regular prayer partner. Intercession is the vital foundation for any mission."

Steve, Glenda, Jason, Lenaya, and Neliana, are excited to share the story of their journey to Wycliffe Mission with Zion Lutheran Church, located a block off State Highway 104 at 15875 4th Avenue at 7th Street in beautiful Silverhill on Sunday, March l. Questions about their visit may be directed to or by calling (251) 945-5209. The Kvale family is "on loan" from AFLC World Missions. Click here to see their website.
