Who Are We?
What is a Swedish heritage church doing in Alabama? It's a long story. Come and find out. In 1905 we were Swedish Lutheran Zion Church of the Augustana Synod. A century later we are Zion Lutheran Church, a member of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations. (The AFLC operates a two year Bible School and a seminary at its headquarters on Medicine Lake in the Minneapolis, Minnesota.) The AFLC is not a synod. We at Zion Lutheran Church believe that final human authority in the churches is vested in the local congregation, subject to the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. We subscribe to the Fundamental Principles of the Lutheran Free Church and the AFLC which includes the following: "Every free congregation, as well as every individual believer, is constrained by the Spirit of God and by the privileges of Christian love to do good and to work for the salvation of souls and the quickening of the spiritual life, as far as its abilities and power permit. Such free spiritual activity is limited neither by parish nor by synodical boundaries." We worship using traditional Lutheran liturgy and hymns. The preaching of the Word and administration of the Sacraments are central in our services. Our goals include the spiritual education of youth and outreach to the community.
