Silverhill Police Chief Kim Wasdin was the special guest at Zion's Men's 710 this month.
When this photo was taken, she was busy in her office before stationing herself at Highway 104 to assure that children would make it safely across that busy highway after school.
"Jen" accompanied her from Baldwin's "Child Abduction Response Team."
Jen, a black and tan bloodhound, and her handler, Heath Moseley, gave a brief demonstration in the church's parking lot after the breakfast.

Camp Dixie Director, Marty Miller, updated men in Baldwin County on new plans for ministry and report on past successes. Marty noted that, "At Camp Dixie we have decided that the Day Camp Program was powerful and useful. We are going to be offering it this coming summer to any congregation that is interested instead of to just congregations that had been affected by Hurricane Katrina. It has been a 'real journey' as Camp Dixie explored new avenues to ministry, what has become 'The Traveling VBS Program.' I’m excited about the opportunities that it presents, because we actually served more campers in the Day Camp program last year than we did in our Main Camp Program at our Perdido Bay site."
Marty has served on the staffs of Camp Omega (MN), Camp Pioneer (NY), Camp Lakeview (IN), and now Baldwin County’s Lutheran Camp Dixie. Hailing from the North Star State’s Brooklyn Park and graduating from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Marty found and married Kim from Mayer, MN, and of course they are both now down on Perdido Bay at beautiful Camp Dixie.

Pastor Alan House, new pastor of Silverhill First Baptist Church, was Zion's special guest this month.
"The Lord brought me to Silverhill," Brother Alan would say. How does a former "oil man" born in Marks, Mississippi, and brought up in Jackson, Mississippi, end up in Silverhill, Alabama, you ask? We really do have an interesting God! There the guy is, an active church member about eleven years ago, when God meets Brother Alan House on his way home from a church meeting. The bottom line? Alan ends up going through seminary in New Orleans, spends six years in a pastorate in Mississippi, and now has accepted the call to pastor Silverhill First Baptist Church. "God can always use 'someone,'" Brother Alan says, "but sometimes God sets you down and explains to you, 'You are that someone!'"

Dwayne Miller shared the history of the woodcarving craft and discussed some of his
projects at our next meeting.
Foley Woodcarver Dwayne Miller spent forty hours
crafting this horse from basswood (left hand) and thirty hours carving
the duck from the darker wood of the catalpa (right hand). Dwayne picked up woodcarving skills when he retired 20 years ago. He has done a bit of history sifting and believes
that woodcarving actually was encouraged and perpetuated by the
medieval church. The woodcarvings in the churches of Rothenberg,
Germany, for example, today remain among the best examples of the
woodcarving craft.

Jerry and Violet Buonauro shared their experiences in the detailing business at our May meeting.
Customers have been bringing 300 to 400 cars a year to the Buonauro's custom vehicle detailing business at their home on U.S. 90. The numbers of cars grew from the beginning and Violet came out one day and started vacuuming a car. From then on, this detailing business has been the work of the Buonauro Duo. Although they started out with newspaper ads and signs, they first had to eliminate the ads because too many customers were coming in.

Max Osborn, seated in a classic rocker in United Banks' offices in the historic Peoples Supply Store, explored the economic future of Central Baldwin County at our April meeting.
Max Osborn is a financial specialist with an interesting resume. Technically, he is President of United Insurance Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Bank. He is itinerant in the sense that he has multiple offices in the United Bank system, and one of those offices is right in Silverhill's own historic Peoples Supply Store. When United Bank moved into Silverhill, it made every attempt to preserve the character of the historic building which predates the formal incorporation of Silverhill.

Our March speaker was "Gus" Utter, seen here feeding some of his goats, a herd he has been breeding since 1985.
Locally known for raising goats, he speaks from experience. He has "shared" a local billy lately in breeding the size of his goats to a bigger animal. Current size is about 150 pounds for a female and maybe 200 pounds for a male goat. So, there was "weight" in what he had to say.
