Foreword

Rose Foukal died just eight days short of her eightieth birthday in January 1999. Rose's family had planned to honor her with a special birthday celebration at her church in Silverhill, Alabama. When word of her death reached her three children, they formed a team, each practicing their individual God given gifts, to alter the celebration plans from birthday to promotion day. God had called Rose home after a long life of serving Him. What could have been a very sad occasion was instead turned into an uplifting experience for those who came to say farewell. This author has never experienced a day in this life that he felt closer to our Lord than the day we bid farewell to Rose Foukal.

The day following the funeral, Rose's three children and their spouses gathered at the residence where she had lived the years of her life since the death of her husband in 1984. Working as a team, they began the task of gathering, sorting and disposing of the contents of the home in order to prepare it for sale. Among the contents found were boxes of letters that had been exchanged between Rose and her family and friends dating back to the 1930's. Letters written by others in the family were found as well. These letters provided the facts needed to write a story; not a fictional story, but a true account of the life of Bernice Foukal Escue Young, my Czech Mate. I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
