Recent retiree and community supporter Shirley Stephens discussed her resent retirement with us this month.

Long-time postal worker Shirley Stephens of beautiful Silverhill will "lick her last stamp" at the Foley post office with the end of March. Foley is "the last" of a number of post offices served over her postal tenure. It has been over 30 years of work for Uncle Sam and it was during that time that "lick-less" stamps came along!

Shirley has been involved with civic affairs on Silverhill's Town Council, has "worked" a book or two with the Silverhill Library's Board, and has served on the Church Council of Zion Lutheran Church. She is an involved citizen working with a variety of organizations and groups. In addition, her musical skills are recognized by many and "Zion Lutheran Church appreciates her piano skills many Sunday mornings," Pastor Dave notes. Silverhill Police Chief Chief Wasdin and Officer Clemmons were our special guests this month.

When this photo was taken, Police Chief Kim Wasdin was busy in her office before stationing herself at Highway 104 to assure that children would make it safely across that busy highway after school. Click here to read more about this fellowship meeting.

Robert EngelThis month's guest speaker was Summerdale’s Robert Engel who recently returned from Honor Flight 4 to the World War II Veterans’ Memorial. "It was an adventure, an honor, and a story worth telling."

“On my Honor Flight we had 86 vets, 44 of them in wheel chairs,” Engel remembers. “And they all learned about it by word of mouth. We need to get the word out to our vets.” People that want to know about the program can call Robert Engel at 251-989-6896. He wants to help every WW II vet get connected to the Honor Flights. Ned Owens and Jack StieberThis month's guest speaker was Jack Stieber, who is taking over the Project Coordinator position from Ned Owens for the next Lutheran building project with Baldwin's Habitat for Humanity. Breaking with precedent, Thrivent for Lutherans has provided seed money for yet another home-building project here in Baldwin County.

During the last five years 1500 homes have been constructed around the United States. 450,000 volunteers have put in nearly three million volunteer hours. Lutherans in our own Baldwin County have constructed three homes to date. The next home, to be built on the Eastern Shore, will be concrete frame construction with conventional wood interior.
